Mobile Money Payouts Are Live Across East Africa

M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and MTN MoMo as first-class payout rails. Here is what that changes.


Mobile money payouts are now live for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda across the Blaaiz platform, available to both consumer users sending to family and friends and to businesses using the API to pay contractors, sellers, or teams in East Africa. M-Pesa for Kenya and Tanzania. Airtel Money for East Africa. MTN Mobile Money for Uganda.

Mobile money is not an alternative payment method in East Africa. For a significant proportion of the population across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, it is the primary financial account. M-Pesa’s penetration in Kenya exceeds 80% of the adult population. Building a payout product for East Africa without mobile money as a primary option is building a product that cannot reach most of its intended recipients.

Payout method: MOBILE_MONEY. Recipient details: phone number and mobile money operator. The rest of the integration is identical to bank transfer payouts. No separate integration path, no special handling, no different webhook format. Mobile money payouts to M-Pesa settle during operating hours, which for M-Pesa is effectively 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.US, UK, Canada, and EU sending to Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda via mobile money.
